Alblasserwaard-Vijfheerenlanden region, The Netherlands
Alblasserwaard Vision
Research by design to assess the current flood risk protection strategy from a spatial perspective.
Due to climate change, the Dutch Delta is facing a major long term flood risk protection challenge. Different flood risk strategies are currently being considered, varying from large scale interventions such as dams that close off the entire estuary to dike reinforcements and local scale interventions that reduce the consequences of flooding. In close cooperation with civil engineering companies, Defacto studies the spatial opportunities and impact related to different strategies. These studies are performed on regional as well as local scales.
Research by design is used to investigate and communicate the impact of flood risk protection strategies on urban compositions. Together with local stakeholders, such as municipal authorities, the effects of various water-safety strategies on the region are investigated in a series of workshops. The outcome of our research is used in the assessment of strategies and contributes to the selection of an optimal flood risk protection strategy for the Netherlands.
